Training Methods

Everyone who wants to learn to cycle, has different needs. Youngsters learn very quickly and usually have no difficulty with learning to balance.

Adults who have never learned to cycle as child, sometimes need a little more help! We have expertise in all aspects of training and our experience will give you the confidence you need to get started.

Our instructors have considerable experience of working in special needs schools and are happy to advise on training for the disabled.

All lessons start 'off road'. Regardless of where you live, it's always possible to find an area of grass or tarmac where you can gain confidence in controlling your bike before venturing on a public road.

Level 1 of  the 'Bikeability' National Standard is all about bike control! Starting and stopping safely, steering where you want to go and being able to look behind and signal without wobbling! Also some training in use of gears and stopping or swerving in an emergency.

Once you have gained these basic skills, we will escort you by road to a quiet area and begin Level 2 road training. Level 2 takes up the bulk of the on road training. You will learn how to deal with the various road junctions, how to deal with very narrow roads and being overtaken by large vehicles.

Level 3 takes these skills to a higher level and deals with complicated junctions and roundabouts. It also enables you to decide whether to ride across particularly busy junctions or whether to get off and walk!
